Bao, aged 10
Truc is now 9 years old and at grade 3 in the local primary school. She no longer shows any symptoms of HIV, which means she is responding well to treatment. Truc lives with her parents, who are also HIV positive, in a small house in Danang city. Truc’s mother works hard to raise , but oftentimes feels lightheaded after taking ARV medicine. On the other hand, Truc’s father is an assistant bricklayer. This job is unstable and takes a toll on his health, but he does not have any other means for income.
Truc’s parents try to protect Truc by keeping her disease a secret. The neighbors in Truc’s community suspect that her family lives with HIV, which brings a greater hardships to the family. Moreover, Truc’s grandparents do not allow their other grandchildren to play with Truc because they have little knowledge about HIV. This isolation creates a sense of shame for Truc and her parents because of the stigma HIV has in Vietnam.
