Tan, aged 9
Tan lives with his parents and grandparents in a small house in a remote moutainous area of Quang Nam province. He was infected with HIV when he was born as his parents are living with HIV too.
Tan is 9 years old now and in grade 3 at the local primary school. He is a healthy, active boy but skinny and no one suspects that he is living with HIV. He receives good care from his parents although their work and health are not stable.
Tan’s parents decided that they should not to tell anyone that he is living with HIV, in case they stop him going to school. He knows how to take care of himself and how to protect his friends and family from his disease.
His father is an electrician but he does not have stable work in his village. He is a casual laborer and raises cows and chickens. Tan’s mother is a factory worker in the industrial zone in Da Nang city, around 90 kilometers from Tan’s home town. So she is only free on Sunday to travel to her home to care for her son.
Tan goes to Ho Chi Minh City every two months with his parents for treatment because his condition is not stable. He also takes medication to prevent TB.
He wants to be a primary school teacher, then he can take care of the little children and become a good person.
