Mai, aged 8
Mai is an eight-year-old girl who lives in the poor Que Son District of Quang Nam Province in Central Vietnam. She is in 3rd grade at the local primary school where she excels in her studies. Through events organized by VNHIP, such as the annual summer trip, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the Tet Celebration, she has become a confident and social young girl with big dreams.
Mai lives with her mother and her brother, both of whom are also living with HIV. Her father passed away in 2009 due to HIV/AIDS, and after his death, they were forced to move into a small temporary house. One year later, they received the generous support of a Vietnamese person living overseas to build a small permanent house. Though Mai’s mother works very hard growing vegetables and raising chickens, it has been difficult for her to make ends meet. Through VNHIP, Mr. Kees Van Der Berk has provided the financial means for Mai’s mother to increase her chicken raising operation which translates into increased income for the family. With this income generation plan, Mai’s mother now has the opportunity to earn 1,500,000 VND (about USD 65) per month. This kind of support is very effective as it enables the family to support themselves. A former VNHIP volunteer, Ms. Sagen Wilk, provides USD 40 per month for food. Proper nutrition is crucial for maintaining Mai’s health. Additionally, Mai receives a yearly scholarship from the Children’s Education Foundation through VNHIP which covers the costs of her schooling including tuition, uniform, and books. Mai and her family would like to send their sincere thanks to Mr. Kees Van Den Berk, Ms. Sagen Wilk, the Children’s Education Foundation, and VNHIP for their meaningful support. You can help:
