Han, aged 9
Han lives with her mother and maternal grandparents in an old house that is approximately 30 square meters in center of Da Nang city. She is 9 years old and at grade 3 in a local primary school.
Three days after giving birth to Han, her mother was informed that that she was HIV positive. Shocked , naturally very distressed, and already dealing with issues arising due to poor nutrition, Han’s mother collapsed, suffering both physical and mental exhaustion. Han's father, after learning of the news, has gone away. To add to her burden, Han’s mother received further information from her doctor that she had benign tumors of the breast. She was terribly weak. Fortunately, Han is HIV negative. Despite the recent shocks and unfortunate twists of fate, this was the motivation needed for Han’s mum to continue to fight and take care of her baby.. Han’s mother was born into a poor family. Han’s grandmother is a hawker, and her income is not stable. Han’s grandfather is clinically deaf, so it difficult for him to find employment. Han’s grandfather became very unhappy that he could not contribute to the family house hold expenses Han’s grandmother struggled on, doing what she could to support her daughter and granddaughter. Han’s mother also battled to get herself back into the workforce. Eventually, although having compromised health, she was able to find employment. She has a degree in accounting. When we came into contact with the family, Han’s grandmother shared the following: “Although our life is very difficult today, we are trying to overcome it. However, my husband (who is a civilian electrician) is currently unemployed, is in need of capital to buy equipment and machinery to repair electrical appliances. Together with Han's mother, I needed money to maintain our livelihood.
