Thuc Quyen's Journey: Overcoming Challenges with Determination
Thuc Quyen is an 8-year-old student in grade 3 at Thanh My Primary School in Nam Giang district. Unfortunately, Quyen lost the use of her right arm when doctors tried to take her out of her mother's womb because her mother had high blood pressure, so she had to give birth normally without surgery. Doctors tried their best to save her and consulted her family that they could conduct surgery when she was 10 years old. However, this accident greatly affected her life and studies. Quyen has to practice writing and do everyday activities with only her left arm. That has limited her ability to participate in school activities and self-care at home. Gradually, the right arm becomes unusable and smaller. Her mother worried that one day this right arm would become paralyzed if there was no intervention. However, due to long distance, difficult economic conditions, as well as the Covid pandemic’s effects, her family has not been able to take her to the hospital for medical examination and rehabilitation for over 1 year. Until support from VNHIP’s project is available, Quyen and her mother were encouraged to take her to Da Nang Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Hospital. Here, she was assessed for mobility and consulted with medical professionals. Her mother gained an understanding of her child's situation and could support her in practicing at home. In addition, VNHIP provided her with an electronic pulse massager to stimulate her arms and muscles. As a result, after practicing and using her electronic pulse massager for 6 months, her arm has become flexible, and she can move and control 3 of her fingers. Since Quyen received support for VNHIP, she has become more motivated and more concerned about her studies. Moreover, she has opportunities to participate in many useful activities organized by VNHIP, such as We Ring the Bell, International Women's Day, and study tours. She also had access to multiple study facilities. Since then, she has become more confident and has been studying harder. She happily shared that "I like drawing, singing, and want to be a teacher". And we do believe that these meaningful supports will encourage her to continue attending school and make her own dream come true. |
