The Fairytale of Em Phuoc
Em Phuoc turned 9 years old this year, an age when thousands of questions about the world are constantly asked, sometimes leaving adults tired, but that is his parents' biggest dream. He was diagnosed with a language disorder alongside Down syndrome. He is timid, afraid to communicate, and often hides behind his mother when he sees strangers. When he started with us, he was in the 3rd grade, but his communication and acquisition of knowledge faced many obstacles. He was unable to put together long sentences or exclamations to express his feelings. Despite these barriers, his eyes show that there are still so many things he wants to express. Despite his family's struggles, they continue to try their best to set financials aside to take the child for language intervention in many places, near and far, but he was still struggling. It seems like all his family's hopes will be abandoned here.
“But then the project Inclusion 1 came like a fairytale for his family.”
Phuoc was supported by Ms. Huyen and Ms. Vi, young, enthusiastic, and dedicated Speech Therapists in Da Nang as part of the Home Intervention Project team. They visit him about 1-2 times/week. Rain or shine, they would always wake up at 4 a.m. to travel 100 km+ from Da Nang to Nui Thanh to meet em Phuoc and other children.
After 5 months of intervention, Phuoc had many clear improvements:
To achieve this, it is all thanks to the efforts of all the technicians, parents, and Phuoc himself. His mother shared, "Seeing my child's changes, I don't know what words to use to describe my feelings. The teachers not only taught me the knowledge to accompany my child, but also how to behave with him and the other children in the family. I wonder if you, as strangers, can be so patient, gentle, and kind to my children, but why can I not? I also have to try harder to change myself.”
Now there is more laughter in the house. Phuoc began chirping with his parents and brother and he also helped his mother serve tea and snacks to the technicians when they arrived.
