A Twin’s Determination: Huong and Lan’s Story
This photo has been 'cartoonized' to protect her identity.
In a small house nestled in the remote mountains of Quang Nam, 15-year-old twins Huong and Lan live with their mother and elderly grandparents. Life has never been easy for them. Their father passed away when they were just four, and while Huong was fortunate to be born healthy, Lan has lived with HIV since birth.
Despite her mother’s unwavering love and hard work, the family’s struggles grew even heavier when Lan developed tuberculosis of the hip. She was hospitalized for a month, growing weak and losing weight. After returning home, she needed extra time to recover before going back to school. Their mother, Ms. Phuong, devoted herself to caring for Lan and their ailing grandfather, but in doing so, she lost her job. With no steady income, even buying basic food became difficult.
At one point, Ms. Phuong considered pulling Lan out of school. Missing two months of education had already set her back, and the family’s financial burden seemed insurmountable. But Lan refused to give up. With determination and the support of her twin sister, she returned to school, determined to catch up.
Huong, an excellent student, dreams of becoming a doctor so she can care for her mother, her sister, and their grandparents. Despite the hardships, she holds onto hope—hope that with education and opportunity, their future can be brighter.
With your support, Huong and Lan can continue their education and turn their dreams into reality.
