Han’s Story: A Daughter’s Dream, A Mother’s Strength
In a small, aging 30-square-meter home in the heart of Da Nang City, 12-year-old Han lives with her mother and grandparents. Despite the many hardships her family has faced, Han remains full of hope for a brighter future.
Just three days after Han was born, her mother received life-changing news—she was HIV-positive. The shock, combined with poor health and malnutrition, left her physically and emotionally drained. Soon after, Han’s father abandoned them. As if life wasn’t already difficult enough, Han’s mother was later diagnosed with benign breast tumors, further weakening her. Fortunately, Han was born HIV-negative. This blessing gave her mother the strength to push forward, determined to raise her daughter despite the overwhelming challenges. Coming from a poor background, Han’s grandmother sells goods on the street to earn a small, unstable income, while her grandfather—an electrician—has struggled to find work due to his hearing impairment. Feeling helpless in supporting his family, he became deeply discouraged. Still, Han’s grandmother worked tirelessly to provide for her daughter and granddaughter, never giving up. Han’s mother, despite her fragile health, fought to re-enter the workforce. With a degree in accounting, she eventually secured a job, but the family continues to struggle to make ends meet. Han’s grandmother shared their struggles with us: "Life is very difficult, but we are doing everything we can to get through it. My husband, who was an electrician, is now unemployed and needs capital to buy equipment to repair electrical appliances. Together with Han’s mother, we need support to sustain our livelihood. More than anything, we want to give Han a childhood like other children." Han dreams of becoming a chef one day so she can take care of her mother and give her the life she deserves.
